Here's a pic of the kids watching 2001: A Space Odyssey. This was after we saw a SpongeBob episode where SpongeBob was in the caveman days, and through an Einsteinian leap of cognition, he discovered cooking. The show evoked 2001 by accompanying SpongeBob's discovery with ominous choir vocals like the monolith scene in 2001. (In the SpongeBob episode it was briefly revealed that the choir was a barbershop quartet.) I was laughing the whole time, which prompted The Boy to ask repeatedly "what are you laughing at dad?" Anyways, I thought I'd show them the monolith scene, as it's one of the foundations of popular culture. The Boy also noted that the monolith scene appeared in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and was asking if the monkeys were going to eat the giant chocolate bar (in CATCF, the monolith was chocolate.) They both liked the whole "Dawn of Man" monkey part at the beginning, but as soon as it reverted to modern people talking a lot, their interest quickly waned. Also, this was taken with my new camera, a Nikon D40x. This is 1600 ISO, not bad. |
