Well, I'm shocked. I actually found something informative in a FARK thread -- a flowchart describing how to apply the scientific method. The image is from Earth Sciences, Lecture 1.
That's the important thing about the scientific method: make-believe tests are not considered to have any value. Only real tests of the real world are used in the scientific method.

Where's the step that performs make-believe tests to tests hypotheses?
You know, like make-belive tests for dating an artifact. Or the make-believe tests for evolution.
